On the Easter weekend, the European youth met in Lommel, Belgium, for the first event of this year's European Motocross Championship in the 65cc class. German DIGA Academy athlete Jamiro Peters from Viersen was also at the start.
In Saturday's qualifying race, the German KTM rider got off to a bad start and found himself outside the top 20 at the beginning of the race. But Jamiro fought his way forward lap by lap and was able to finish in a strong fifth place, a good starting position for Sunday's races.
At the start of the first race on Sunday, Jamiro came out of the starting gate much better than on Saturday and was already in fifth place after the first few metres. With good overtaking manoeuvres in the first lap, Jamiro was able to move up to third place. For long periods of the race, Jamiro was able to hold on to his podium position, but in the end he had to admit defeat to the fast Dutchman Jaspers and the local hero Torre van Mechgelen. At the end of the first race, Jamiro crossed the finish line in a great fifth place.
At the start of the second race, the DIGA Academy athlete had the best reaction and was able to take the lead straight away. However, the young Briton Dale made it clear from the start that he would not settle for second place. Jamiro fought back, but had to give up the top position to Dale in lap 3. Torre van Mechgelen was already lurking in third place, putting a lot of pressure on the German. In round five, Peters had to admit defeat to him as well, but was still in an excellent third place. After a crash in the last lap, the dream of a podium finish was finally over. In the end, Jamiro saw the chequered flag in sixth place in the second race and also took sixth place in the day's standings.
Jamiro Peters: "All in all, it was a good weekend. I was able to compete for podium places in both races and take important points for the championship. Thanks to my team, my family and of course Didi, Justin and Sasa who accompanied and supported me during the race weekend."
